Relief after Macron wins first French vote

Terug

Emmanuel Macron has won the first round of the French election. In a run-off with Marine Le Pen in the second round on 7 May, French voters will choose their next President. Polls indicate that the centrist candidate will beat Le Pen by a wide margin. The victory of Macron already has a positive effect on markets. His program is aimed at economic reforms and has a pro-EU stance. In contrast, far-right leader Le Pen wants to end European integration.

The first round of the French Presidential election has been a victory for those who want France to remain in the EU and in the Eurozone. With 96% of the votes counted, the independent centrist Macron managed to win 23.9% of the popular vote, National Front leader Le Pen followed with 21.4%. The run-off will give French voters a clear choice between Macron’s liberal, pro-EU policies and Le Pen’s vision of a France that rejects immigration and European integration. Polls show that most prefer Macron; in all likelihood he will win the second round on 7 May.
