Investors often make the point that earnings drive stock returns. And earnings also determine which stocks are leading the market at a given point in the economic cycle. For example, late in a cycle, it is not unusual to see growth stocks outperforming the market, as investors believe their earnings will hold up better in an environment of slowing economic growth.
